every once in awhile i go on these adventures to see what i can find about the conception of childhood and this morning that led me to questioning why we have so few studies of the work children do in the household and why almost all feminist analysis assumes that
we know what “housework” consists of
that housework is generally a source of disempowerment regardless of race/culture
that amount of housework done is a reliable indicator of power differentials (esp in favor of the male in heterosexual/diff-sex pairings)
that self-reported levels of housework done are reliable in any case
anyway, the model of studying gender egalitarianism vis-a-vis the division of household labor relies on the breadwinner/homemaker scenario, which most black women have not been able to completely adhere to… ever. middle class black women and their daughters have a very long history of entrepreneurship, because it is very easy to fall on hard times as a black person in this country (USA). this is just one of the papers i found, I'll likely post more later!
